If this terrace were a theater, the city would be its stage.
Tommy Tune, the famed 10-time Tony Award-winning choreographer, performer and director, has relisted his Manhattan penthouse for $2.9 million, Gimme Shelter has learned.
The charming Beekman/Sutton Place dwelling comes with a dramatic, 2,075-square-foot terrace where Tune held some memorable soirées over the years.
“I had a party for [the late actress] Carol Channing and 200 Broadway friends showed up,” Tune told Gimme by email.
The penthouse, at 400 E. 52nd St., is in an Emery Roth-designed building developed by Bing & Bing in the late 1920s and early 1930s that was last on the market in 2022 for $2.2 million — $700,000 less than its current asking price.
The one-bedroom, one-bathroom residence is 900 square feet.
Known as the Tower, it comes with a stage- and dance-worthy terrace featuring stunning river and city views.
“There are so many things I love about the Tower,” Tune told Gimme. “I love that you have to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the Tower, and I love that I can host a party on my terrace.”
“I also love that 52nd Street is a dead-end street. You really get to know everyone on the block — even [actress] Uma Thurman,” Tune quipped.
Tune also found it an inspiring place to create art. “I’ve created over 100 paintings in the Tower,” Tune said, adding that he also loves “soaking in my Jacuzzi and I can see the Chrysler Building.”
Design details inside the penthouse include 13-foot ceilings — which Tune particularly appreciates for his 6-foot-6.5-inch frame. There are also hardwood floors, stage lighting and lots of windows to showcase scenic views.
The home opens to a great room with a dining area and a chef’s kitchen. There’s also a sunlit bedroom.
The landscaped roof deck features an outdoor shower and an artist’s sink.
Tune, 86, bought the penthouse in 2007 for around $1.3 million, according to reports.
The building turned co-op in 1987.
It is in one of five Emery Roth-designed co-op buildings that make up a complex called Southgate, which has more than 400 units. Building amenities include a doorman, a live-in resident manager, a garden, a laundry room, a bike room and individual storage for rent or purchase.
“I love the community that Southgate offers,” Tune said.
Douglas Elliman broker Kelly Killoren Bensimon, a “RHONY” reality TV star alum who is listing Tune’s apartment, agreed.
As for the up-leveled price, she told Gimme: “It’s rare to see such an iconic living space coupled with a vast outdoor terrace in the heart of the illustrious Beekman and Sutton Place neighborhoods.
“With supply and demand, scarcity and limited inventory being the characteristics of the new real estate archetype, this penthouse is like a Birkin [bag]. It is rare — like finding a needle in a haystack,” Bensimon added.
Tune also owns an additional penthouse in the Southgate complex at 414 E. 52nd St., which was also on the market for four months last year — for $2.3 million — before it was delisted in July. The listing brokers were Corcoran’s Leighton Candler, Jennifer Reardon and Bradley Comisar. That’s also a one-bedroom, one-bath penthouse with a wrap terrace showcasing river and city views.
Tune bought that unit, which was once a ballroom with 12-foot ceilings, for close to $1.4 million in 2013 — and enjoyed entertaining there, playing croquet on the terrace and hosting fireworks parties with guests like Lauren Bacall, according to the New York Times.
The beloved Texan-born icon, who has become synonymous with Broadway and entertaining over the decades, also owns a home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
