It’s time to make one thing clear about the mythical March Madness Cinderella

The thing we probably have to keep in mind is that we keep looking for something we’ve never really gotten. That’s the myth of the NCAA Tournament. We have been told for so long that this is where Cinderella comes to dance every year, without fail, and yet Cinderella never does actually finish the story. Not really. Not entirely. Yet on we search, in search of slippers.

In the opening rounds? Sure. We’ve gotten those. We’ve gotten Saint Peter’s over Kentucky and Purdue, and Fairleigh Dickinson over Purdue, and UMBC over Virginia. We’ve gotten Final Four runs out of VCU and George Mason and Loyola of Chicago. Even in this decidedly un-Cinderella tournament in which all four No. 1 seeds and three of the four No. 2s populate the Elite Eight, we got the usual 12-over-5 upset when McNeese sent Clemson packing.

But a real Cinderella?

As in, “Hoosiers” gone to the next level?
