Russian billionaire finds a buyer for his Versailles-like NYC condo amid a massive global property sell-off

Russian airport billionaire Valery Kogan and his wife, Olga, have found a buyer for their extravagant gold-and-onyx condo at Manhattan’s landmarked Plaza Hotel, Gimme Shelter can reveal.

Once asking $50 million following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this Plaza pad — decked out like a mini-Versailles — was last asking $23 million and is now in contract, sources said. The final sale price, as well as the new owner, are not yet known.

The 5,302-square-foot apartment is on the 10th floor of the famed edifice at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. It’s a combination of two units, 1007 and 1009 — and it comes with Central Park views.

A separate one-bedroom, 782-square-foot apartment across the hall, at 1008, is not part of this deal.

While Kogan was once close to Putin, they are now at odds — fighting over ownership of Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. Russian prosecutors filed a case against Kogan and Dmitry Kamenshchik, claiming they failed to renationalize the holding company that manages the facility, according to Russian news reports. In Russia, it’s illegal for foreign entities to control assets that are strategic to national security.

The sale comes shortly after the embattled billionaire couple sold their apartment at 15 Central Park West for $33.89 million, as Gimme reported exclusively.

The sprawling Plaza condo comes with its own castle-like turret, and features four bedrooms and 4½ baths.

The 21-story Plaza Hotel was built in 1907 in French Renaissance style, inspired by a château and designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh. The Kogans bought the two units for around $26 million and then combined them.

The over-the-top design details include 24-karat gold trim, pricey stone, Venetian plaster, vaulted ceilings, oversize windows, walls sconces and custom cabinetry.

The dwelling opens to a foyer that leads to a great room with high ceilings, paneled walls, crystal chandeliers and inlay floors.

There’s also a chef’s kitchen and a formal dining room with columns overlooking Central Park, while a corridor boasts a built-in bar.

The Kogans, currently in a massive global property sell-off, also sold a penthouse in Israel for $33 million and a condo at 515 Park Ave. for $14.5 million, which had first listed for $25 million. In addition, they have another home in Israel that first listed for $259 million and is now asking a dramatically less $89 million, according to reports. Finally, the Kogans sold their 7-acre Greenwich, Conn., estate for $10.4 million. That home, at 18 Simmons Lane, once asked $20 million and also features turrets, as Gimme Shelter previously reported.

The listing broker of the Plaza Hotel apartment, Charlie Attias of Compass, declined to comment.
