Rangers rule injured Arthur Kaliyev out for the season

Arthur Kaliyev has been ruled out for the remainder of the season — including the playoffs if the Rangers make it — with an upper-body injury.

The 23-year-old forward, whom the Blueshirts plucked off the waiver wire from the Kings in January, finishes the 2024-25 campaign having played just 14 games, after he started the season on long-term injured reserve with a fractured clavicle he sustained during training camp.

“It’s really tough,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after the Rangers’ morning skate Tuesday in Tarrytown, ahead of their matchup with the Flames at Madison Square Garden.

“Another young player that we’re moving in and out of the lineup and he’s done some good things for us. He got back in the lineup and got a chance to make an impact and that happened. That’s really tough. You never want to see anybody go down. It’s tough.”

Kaliyev had yet to play in a game this season before joining the Rangers. He collected three goals and one assist during his brief stint in New York, over which he served as a healthy scratch 11 times.

Kaliyev is set to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at the conclusion of this season.

Carson Soucy was a healthy scratch for a third straight game, while Calvin de Haan watched from the press box for a seventh consecutive contest.

“[Soucy has] been good, don’t have any issues with the players that aren’t playing,” Laviolette said. “Again, six spots on defense. We’ve got eight defensemen here. I liked the six and the way that they’re playing right now, so we didn’t make a change [against Calgary]. We’re happy to have both him and de Haan here. I know it’s tough sitting out, nobody likes to sit out, but I like the way that our defense is playing right now.”

Brennan Othmann also served as a healthy scratch for the first time since he was recalled on Feb. 24.

Carrying a season-high nine-game point streak (six goals, seven assists) into Tuesday’s game, Artemi Panarin has racked up 22 points in his last 20 games (nine games, 13 assists) and 22 points in his last 29 (13 games, 20 assists).

Panarin also has a home point streak of five games for the 14th time in his New York tenure, which is the fifth most in franchise history.

Since the beginning of this month, Panarin’s 13 points are tied with the Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl for the most in the NHL. This is the star Russian wing’s fifth 70-point season with the Rangers, tying Mika Zibanejad and Mark Messier for the fifth most in team history.

Panarin’s 10th straight 40-assist campaign marks the most among active players and is tied for the sixth most in a row by an undrafted player in NHL history.

Igor Shesterkin got the starting nod Tuesday night against the Flames, marking his 51st start of the season. The star Russian netminder is now just seven starts away from tying his career high of 58, which he set during the 2022-23 season.
