‘Home Alone’ house sells for $5.5M after a 7-month contract allowed owners one last Christmas there

The famed red-brick “Home Alone” house has finally sold to its new owners — and they’re all in on its Hollywood history.

The Georgian-style property in Winnetka, Illinois, famously known as the McCallister family residence in the 1990 holiday classic “Home Alone,” has sold for $5.5 million, according to Mansion Global. That’s a cool $250,000 over its original asking price of $5.25 million.

Listed in May 2024, the property was snapped up in just a week, but the deal didn’t close until last Thursday after a seven-plus-month wait.

Why the delay? The sellers wanted one last end-of-year bash in the house that made movie history.

“There was an agreement that the sellers would love the opportunity to remain in the home for one more holiday season,” Lori Nieman of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, the buyers’ agent told Mansion Global. Dawn McKenna of Coldwell Banker Realty represented the listing.

The sale marks the first time in more than a decade that the dwelling has changed hands.

Built in 1921 and extensively renovated in 2018, the 9,100-square-foot Georgian-style home features five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a modern kitchen, a home theater and an indoor sports court while preserving its recognizable architectural details from the 1990 film. The previous owners purchased the property in 2012 for $1.58 million through a trust and had kept a low profile throughout the sale.

Updates include a sleek open-concept kitchen, a private home theater and even an indoor sports court.

Still, the home’s most recognizable features — like the grand staircase Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) famously sledded down — remain intact.

Nieman said her clients were captivated by several winning attributes of the home.

“Like everybody else, they love the significance of the home and its place in cinematic history. They understand that and embrace that,” she shared. “That said, the home and all the wonderful renovations and the expansion of the home also played into their decision.”

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom estate sits just 20 miles north of Chicago and boasts a luxurious primary suite complete with a gas fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a spa-like bathroom with a soaking tub and dual vanities.

The property is also just blocks from Winnetka’s charming village center and the shores of Lake Michigan.

While the identities of the new owners remain under wraps — those details are not yet in the public record — Nieman assured they’re thrilled to be the latest caretakers of this slice of movie history.

“They want to be stewards of the home for a long time to come,” she said.
