Trump’s no-penalty sentence: Letters to the Editor — Jan. 14, 2025

The Issue: Judge Juan Merchan’s no-penalty sentence for President-elect Donald Trump in “hush money” case.

The real felons are the politicians who have gone after President-elect Donald Trump with their “lawfare” farce and wasted taxpayer dollars to the tune of at least $50 million in New York and elsewhere (“Don sentenced to . . . nothing,” Jan. 11).

These hypocrites who profess that they want to do good for society focused on this, instead of dealing with the mentally ill and homeless. Maybe they should resign and get real jobs. That would better serve this city.

The fiasco with Judge Juan Merchan, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Trump is over. Perhaps the city can now get deal with real criminals and their behavior on New York City streets and subways.

While the quality of life here is diminishing — thanks to crime, filth, aggressive homeless individuals and now congestion pricing — politicians and politicized judges play on as if they were the orchestra on the sinking Titanic.

I wonder what the cost of this political fiasco was to New York City residents.

The Post clouded and obscured the issues at hand around Trump’s sentencing. Judge Merchan acted morally and ethically in conducting this case.

Trump tried to hide a sexual liaison with a porn star before the she went public prior to the 2016 election and because a president cannot be charged with a crime while in office, Merchan was under a time constraint.

Trump and his attorneys did everything they could to delay the proceedings with briefs that had no merit, yet people want to criticize the justice system for finding him a convicted criminal. This kind of reasoning will surely lead to the end of our democracy.

Let me get this correct: Trump was convicted of 34 counts and the punishment is nothing. He — being the first president convicted of a felony — received good wishes from the Manhattan judge as this ridiculous trial came to a close. It was a waste of time and taxpayers money.

Selective prosecution is alive and well in the Empire State.

The Issue: Mark Zuckerberg blames Biden for 2020 Facebook censorship amid recent fact-check removal.

While the left clutches its pearls and gnashes its teeth at Mark Zuckerberg, and the right is busy with hagiography, celebrating his “road to Damascus” conversion — only Miranda Devine has held her nerve (“Don’t let Zuck pass the buck,” Miranda Devine, Jan.13).

She’s reminded us of the extreme damage done by President Biden, enabled by Zuckerberg and Meta. Zuck’s change of heart is situational. He is a spineless coward.

Zuckerberg’s recent decision to remove fact-checkers from Meta platforms is not a bold step toward free speech, but a master class in spineless opportunism. He claims to be resisting government influence, yet his decision reeks of political pressures, just from a different faction.

His dinner with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago and subsequent policy shifts make it clear that the man in charge of platforms that influence nearly half of the world’s population follows the prevailing political winds.

If Zuckerberg truly believes in the value of free speech, he must recognize that freedom without accountability is a recipe for disaster. Freedom requires truth and transparency, which are principles currently being threatened by his decision.
