How to help LA fire victims — where to send donations to those in need

Americans are looking to do their part as devastating wildfires continue to ravage Los Angeles — and there are plenty of ways to offer help at this important moment.

Very quickly, charities and various relief funds both local and national have turned their attention toward the tragedy, working around the clock to give emergency personnel and devastated victims everything they need to endure the natural disaster.

And the support is needed now more than ever, Liz Lin, president of the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, told The Post.

Firefighters will be in it for the long haul — and need a range of supplies to help them do their jobs safely, according to one local organization accepting donations. REUTERS

“We’re entering day three of the fire and everybody’s starting to get tired,” Lin said.

“We’re in it for the long haul,” she added — saying that the LAFD and other responders likely have at least another month’s worth of work ahead of them.

Lin’s organization is currently collecting emergency funding for supplies that City of Angels firefighters need most — as they continue the grueling battle against the harrowing blazes.

At this time, Lin explained, the LAFDF are using donations to acquire more fire shelters — aluminum tent-like coverings low to the ground that firefighters can burrow in for safety in dire situations.

Money sent will also help the support organization buy hand tools like rakes and shovels for brush fires. Hydration backpacks for firefighters are also needed, according to Lin.

The foundation is just one part of a vast network of groups collecting funds for supplies and services — to the point that it can become disorienting to those trying to help.

For that reason, Laurie Styron, the CEO and executive director of CharityWatch, told CNBC, it’s important that Americans “don’t donate impulsively.”

“Take your time to confirm that a charity is not only legitimate and efficient but is actively providing aid on the ground.”

She also cautioned against putting money toward crowdfunded campaigns as well.

“Charities are better equipped to distribute aid equitably to everyone who needs help.”

And there are other ways, Lin stressed, to show your support besides financial consideration — anyone can quickly boost the morale of first responders with a public show of support.

“Show your love and show your unity of spirit with them on social media,” she urged.

“When the men and women come off [their shifts], I’m telling them to go ahead and scroll through the posts on Instagram and on Facebook so that they can see all the love that they’re getting,” she said.
