Meghan McCain ruthlessly called out Meghan Markle over the poorly-timed trailer release for “With Love, Meghan.”
A teaser for the royal’s light-hearted Netflix lifestyle show dropped Thursday, just days after extreme violence occurred in the US.
“I was originally a Meghan Markle supporter, I thought she was cool, stylish and refreshing. Like the rest of the world my opinion changed when she disrespected the royal family,” McCain, 40, began in a lengthy post shared on X.
“Now that she wants to be American again instead of British aristocracy what she seems to forget is Americans want real, raw, uncensored. All of this even in the trailer is highly curated, produced and out of touch.”
The former “View” co-host went on to bring up how “there have been 2 terror attacks in 2 days, major wars raging and Americans can’t pay for groceries,” referencing the killing of at least 14 people in New Orleans during a New Year’s celebration, the deadly Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Europe.
“We are a country in rage, uncertainty and intensity right now,” McCain said. “This concept is ill advised.”
The “Bad Republican: A Memoir” author said she would have instructed the Duchess of Sussex, 43, to instead “do a show helping bring fresh food to food deserts in low income neighborhoods.”
She concluded, “Do something to help people instead of your ego. This is why the world doesn’t like you, nothing else. Just completely and utterly tone deaf to the moment.”
The “With Love, Meghan” trailer showed Markle putting together picturesque meals while The Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Do You Believe in Magic?” plays in the background.
“This is probably one of the most glamorous moments of my life,” celebrity guest Mindy Kaling comments at one point in the video, causing the “Suits” alum to crack up with laughter.
Markle is also seen in another part of the clip sweetly cozying up to her husband, Prince Harry.
Following McCain’s soliloquy about the trailer, another critic pointed out, “But also, it’s 2024, not 2014. People don’t want more curated lifestyle influencers. Even Martha Stewart pivoted her brand.”
The critic added, “People crave authenticity. They no longer idolize perfectly crafted celebrities anymore,” to which the former TV host replied, “That’s very true.”
McCain also agreed with a political commentator’s negative opinion of the teaser, which stated, “This is one of the most out of touch things I’ve seen in a while.
“Most Americans are struggling to keep food on the table, to pay their rent, their mortgage, etc. Who wants to watch an ex duchess walk around her Montecito mansion picking flowers from a bougie home garden? That’s a lifestyle very few can relate to.”
Page Six reached out to Markle’s rep and Netflix for comment on the backlash but did not hear back.
Although some agreed with McCain’s point of view, not all were on the same page with her.
“Actually having overcome breast cancer this year – taking a look around at all the peril and ills from the school shootings, CEO attacks, setting fire to women on the subway – I think she has come forth with joy and wonder at a time when we all desperately need it,” one supporter wrote on X.
“I want to sprinkle color on donuts and enjoy life while I can. Don’t pathologize taking time to dwell in beauty and companionship – we all need more of that right now..”
Another added, “Imagine being triggered by a Netflix series. Lmao.”
McCain has ripped Markle online before for skipping out on King Charles III’s coronation in 2023.
“There are arguably few people on Earth more obsessed with seeing themselves on camera than Meghan,” she wrote in a scathing op-ed published in April of that year. “Now, all of a sudden, she doesn’t want to be pictured in public, dressed up in one of those ridiculous tiny hats? I’m sorry. I’m not buying it.”
Markle and Harry’s reps do not reply to every little nugget of criticism. However, they made a poignant statement last February when eyes were on them in preparation for the Invictus Games.
“We’ve heard time and time again that certain opportunities are make or break for the couple,” their spokesperson told the Mirror at the time.
“They’re still working and pursuing what they believe in, despite constantly being challenged and criticized. This couple will not be broken.”
