It’s only a matter of time until “somebody is going to blow a gasket” and puts a cherry on top of this miserable Bears season.
That’s what wide receiver D.J. Moore predicts after Chicago dropped its eighth straight game Monday night, a 30-12 road loss to the division rival Vikings.
“Nobody wants to blow a gasket,” Moore said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “But somebody is going to blow a gasket soon.”
For the third straight game, Chicago was shut out in the first half Monday night before showing signs of life in the final two quarters.
Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams completed 18 of 31 attempts for 191 yards and a touchdown.
However, he was sacked twice, lost a fumble and was frequently inaccurate with passes to open receivers.
After taking a hit from Vikings linebacker Jihad Ward in the second half, Williams — the Bears’ first overall pick in this year’s draft — laid out on the bench in apparent.
That moment sparked concern from ESPN’s Troy Aikman with the toll of the season in a dysfunctional franchise weighing on the former USC star.
“We were watching him on the sidelines. He was grimacing and in an enormous amount of pain. When you watch him, you can tell that he’s a defeated guy,” Aikman said on the broadcast.
“… What you worry about is a rookie quarterback losing confidence.”
What began as a season of promise has continued to unravel, resulting in the firings of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and head coach Matt Eberflus.
“The thing I have learned through it all is just you’ve gotta be on your own [stuff] and you know, trying to get other guys to do certain things, it takes away from your preparation. So you’ve got to take care of your own [stuff] and just do your job,” star tight end Cole Kmet told the Tribune.
“And then if other guys aren’t doing their job or other people aren’t doing their job then that’s on them. We haven’t executed clean enough and that’s usually what it comes down to in these NFL games. We’re on this crazy losing streak at this point right now.”
Kmet, the Bears’ second-round pick in 2020, has tried to keep his head above water as the losses have piled up.
“You question your process and the way you go about things. I think I’m right. I think I am doing the right things throughout the week but obviously the results haven’t been there for that. It’s been hard,” he said.
