“Below Deck Down Under” star Captain Jason Chambers announced he was diagnosed with skin cancer but is getting a second opinion to determine the severity.
Chambers took to Instagram Monday to share a video of himself saying he got a biopsy, which is a procedure that removes a tissue sample to determine any abnormalities, and “it came back with melanoma.”
Melanoma is a potentially dangerous form of skin cancer that “develops when melanocytes (the cells that give the skin its tan or brown color) start to grow out of control,” according to the American Cancer Society.
Chambers, 52, explained that he had the biopsy done while on vacation in Bali, but he returned home to Australia for a second opinion.
“The Australian doctors here, which are fantastic in Australia, they weren’t happy with what the indications told them, to go to the stage two, which would be [to] cut out a bigger section and test the glands, so I’m waiting for the specimen to come from Bali,” he shared.
The Bravolebrity appeared slightly anxious while saying that the specimen may not arrive until “after Christmas.”
“It’s a bit of a wait, so fingers crossed,” he added.
Chambers, who has worked on yachts for most of his life, admitted he “never used to wear sunscreen” because of “chemicals” and would only dab zinc on his nose, but that has since changed.
“There’s so many products out there that are chemical-free now, which is great,” he told his followers. “So, make sure you throw on some sunscreen, get some shade and cover yourself up and enjoy your day at the sun.”
The dad of one wrote in the caption of his post that he thought he “was resistant to the damaging effects of the sun” since he has spent most of his life outdoors.
“I love the sun and its health benefits are evident, but be wise and like everything in life, it’s all about balance, choose your battles,” he continued.
“With a diagnosed melanoma biopsy, I now have an anxious wait and what I thought was a skin spot turned in just 6 months, early detection is the key.”
Chambers received hundreds of comments from fans wishing him well, as well as “Below Deck Mediterranean” Captain Sandy Yawn, who wrote, “Praying for good results.”
