After the Rangers debacle, former Habs Chris Nilan and Rick Green weigh in on the state of NHL refereeing.
There were missed penalty calls and phantom penalty calls with referee Kelly Sutherland penalizing the Canadiens’ Josh Anderson for “roughing” in the second period. That seemed like payback by Sutherland for Anderson complaining about a missed penalty in the first period when Anderson was flattened by the Rangers’ Chris Kreider when he didn’t even have the puck with no call. The winning goal for the Rangers came after the Canadiens’ Joel Armia was tripped without any penalty call.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has insisted in the past the NHL has the best referees in the world. It’s hard to fix a problem if you don’t believe there is one.
