Baker Mayfield, wife have been dealing with $12 million family drama ‘for a lot longer than people know’

Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was even-keeled when asked about a $12 million lawsuit he and his wife, Emily, filed against his father’s company for alleged breach of contract on Nov. 22.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Mayfield explained that the couple is doing well and is surrounded by great people amid the legal battle with his family.

“This has been a process going on for a while now. I’m not going to get into details,” Mayfield said when a reporter asked “how much emotional currency” this situation has cost him over the years.

“It’s something Emily and I have been dealing with for a lot longer than people know. It’s just a matter of the news is breaking now. We have a beautiful baby girl [Kova Jade], seven and a half months old, living in Tampa, got extended, great group around me, got no complaints.”

Mayfield re-signed with the Bucs on a three-year deal worth $100 million in March.

The Mayfields and their company, Team BRM, LLC (TBRM), filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Texas last week alleging breach of contract by Camwood Capital Management Group over a failure to repay $11,741,000.00, plus interest.

Mayfield and his wife took action again after both parties reached a confidential settlement effective Jan. 23, 2024, in which Camwood Capital would repay the funds in installments beginning Sept. 30, according to documents obtained by ESPN.

Mayfield’s lawyers claim Camwood has yet to repay a single dollar since the settlement earlier this year.

That settlement also included the refinancing of a loan to help the firm repay them.

“It is now clear that Defendants had no intention of making Plaintiffs whole when they entered into the Settlement Agreement,” the suit states. “To date, Camwood Capital has not repaid even one dollar under the Settlement Agreement, Defendants have failed to refinance their existing loan, and Defendants have not provided Plaintiffs with access to their books and records (continuing a pattern and practice of preventing Plaintiffs from accessing pertinent information).”

The Mayfields requested in their lawsuit last week for Camwood to repay the $11,741.000, plus interest.

Mayfield’s father, James, founded Camwood Capital Management Group, which is located in Austin, and he also serves as the senior managing director.

The quarterback’s brother, Matt Mayfield, is the managing director at Camwood where he leads all acquisition strategies and negotiations, deal sourcing, transaction due diligence and structuring, fundraising and portfolio company management, according to the website.

The couple’s initial complaint said Camwood and its subsidiaries obtained $12 million from them between 2018 and 2021 without their knowledge or consent.
