A former Parti Québécois MNA, Fournier also torpedoed rumours she might seek the mayor’s chair in Montreal.
Longueuil mayor Catherine Fournier ended any speculation Thursday over her political future, announcing she would run for re-election in the 2025 municipal election.
Admitting that a politician’s job can be a thankless one and criticism can often be vitriolic, Fournier noted citizens had told her she has their support. The mayor said that multiple resignations from municipal politics send a message that can be discouraging, but, in fact, the work is a lot more gratifying than many believe.
Fournier, a former Parti Québécois MNA, also torpedoed rumours she might seek the mayor’s chair in Montreal or make a run at the provincial or federal level.
She said she believes being mayor places her in a better position to change the daily lives of citizens and is a very concrete power to deal with higher levels of government.
Fournier said affordable housing, infrastructure and the environment are among the main issues she will tackle in a second term.
