Quebec’s holiday crackdown on impaired driving begins Friday

The campaign runs till Jan. 2 and includes an increased number of roadblocks on Quebec’s highways.

The Sûreté du Québec announced Thursday that the province’s police forces will begin their annual holiday crackdown on drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol.

An online information campaign will explain the personal, social and legal consequences of impaired driving.

Meanwhile, the Société de l’Assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) will launch its own information campaign on the importance of having a designated driver as Christmas parties and other celebrations become more frequent over the course of the holiday season.

Impaired driving remains one of the principle causes of death and injury on Quebec highways, being a factor in 25 per cent of fatal crashes and 15 per cent of collisions with serious injury recorded between 2018 and 2022.
