She’s the first woman to occupy the post.
Former Quebec premier Pauline Marois has named been chancellor of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), becoming the first woman to occupy that post.
Marois, who was also Quebec’s first female premier, has been named to a five-year mandate.
As chancellor her job will be to improve governance and officially represent the university.
The post has been previously occupied by Quebec entrepreneur Réal Raymond and administrator Pierre J. Jeanniot.
UQAM rector Stéphane Pallage said it was a “privilege” to welcome Marois, “whose human qualities and social commitment match those of UQAM.”
Marois meanwhile while said she is “very proud” to assume her post.
“I share the values of audacity and commitment to the community of this university born from the Quiet Revolution,” she said in a communiqué. “For 55 years UQAM has contributed to the growth of Quebec and today has projects I enthusiastically support.”
Marois, who entered politics during the era of René Lévesque, served as a minister of health, education and finance before being elected premier from 2012 to 2014.
