Montreal police said residents were temporarily evacuated as firefighters swiftly control blaze.
A 57-year-old man was taken to a hospital in critical condition Monday afternoon after a fire broke out in the basement of a triplex on Iberville St. in the borough of Villeray—St-Michel—Parc-Extension.
The fire began around 2 p.m. and was quickly brought under control by firefighters, according to Montreal police spokesperson Véronique Dubuc.
Nearby residences between Legendre and Louvain Sts. were temporarily evacuated as a precaution but residents have since returned to their homes, Dubuc said.
Initial evidence from the scene suggests the fire was accidental. The area remains secured while police continue their investigation.
