The suspects fled in a stolen vehicle, threw various objects from a window and lost a tire during the chase.
Four people are in custody after a dramatic highway chase in the Loon Lake area earlier this week.
Around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Loon Lake RCMP got a report that two stolen vehicles were heading north on Highway 26 toward Loon Lake.
Followup reports said the people inside one of the vehicles had a gun, and had “recently” pointed it at somebody, RCMP said in a Friday news release.
When officers spotted a car matching the description of one of the stolen vehicles at Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation, they turned on their lights and sirens and tried to pull it over.
“The car swerved to avoid police and fled northbound on Highway 21 towards Pierceland,” the release said. “Given the safety risk, officers followed the car.”
People in the stolen vehicle started throwing things out, including “gas cans, stereos, a floor mat, bags and a number of other unknown objects,” the release said.
Police tried to stop the vehicle again, this time with a tire deflation device at the Beaver River Bridge.
The device left two of its tires deflated — one of which fell off completely — but it continued, eventually merging onto Highway 55 “at a high rate of speed,” crossing over into incoming traffic and nearly hitting another vehicle.
Police continued to try to stop the car until it ran off the road and into a field, hitting a fence.
The driver and three passengers fled on foot, but officers quickly caught up with them and arrested three men and one woman.
A search of the car and the suspects’ possessions turned up nearly 200 grams of crystal methamphetamine, ammunition, brass knuckles, a hatchet and various “drug trafficking paraphernalia,” the release said.
A 38-year-old man from Onion Lake faces charges related to dangerous driving and fleeing from police, as well as resisting arrest and possession of a prohibited firearm.
Two 34-year-old men from Onion Lake face charges including resisting a peace officer, possession of a firearm where prohibited and failing to comply with release conditions.
A 21-year-old woman from Thunderchild First Nation is charged with resisting a peace officer and extortion without a firearm.
All four have also been charged with possession of meth for the purpose of trafficking, robbery with a firearm, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
They appeared in Loon Lake Provincial Court on Thursday.
