Luka Doncic to miss time with wrist injury in tough Mavericks blow

Mavericks guard Luka Doncic sustained a right wrist sprain and will be reevaluated in one week, the team announced Thursday.

The five-time All-Star underwent an MRI after he sustained the wrist injury during Dallas’ 132-91 victory over New Orleans in their NBA Cup game Tuesday.

Doncic, 25, missed his first game of the season Sunday due to a right knee bruise when the Mavericks beat the Thunder, 121-119.

The Slovenian star felt his wrist flare up in the first quarter of the Mavericks’ win against the Pelicans, but he said afterward it was “nothing serious,” according to ESPN.

Doncic’s right wrist was wrapped in gray tape for a portion of the game.

He finished with 26 points, five rebounds and five assists at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Doncic is set to miss Dallas’ matchups with the Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks and Knicks before being reevaluated.

He is averaging 28.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game this season.

Having won their last three games, the Mavericks (8-7) are tied with the Kings for the 10th spot in the Western Conference.

Dallas will lean on guards Kyrie Irving, who averaging 24.3 points this season, and Klay Thompson, who’s still adjusting to his new surroundings after an offseason trade from the Warriors.

The Mavericks and the Nuggets (8-5) face off in an NBA Cup game in Denver on Friday.
