TV betting ‘experts’ leaving fans relying on blind bad faith

Among the most enduring and endearing traditions of the Post sports section appear Thursdays and Fridays when colleagues actually volunteer for public scorn to choose among 35 or so college and NFL games to provide their selections, including Best Bets, against the betting lines.

Don’t try this at home! It’s known as “betting the board,” and it’s nearly impossible to sustain a money-up record throughout the season. If actually applied, it’s a great way to go broke by October. It starts with the football itself, which has pointed ends that make it bounce crazily — often into the arms of the other side.

You can’t handicap the bounce of footballs in one game, let alone 14. Then there are game-changing misconduct penalties, players stylishly dropping the ball inches from the goal line, dubious game-changing flags.

Thus far, a few Post pickers are above sea level with their best bets, but here’s the beauty of the beast: Their picks — right or wrong — are weekly updated then published, providing a lasting lesson for those who know it’s hard enough to win one in a row.
