An elderly woman was fatally run over by an Amazon delivery truck while departing a loved one’s grave site.
Sandra Fitts, 79, was crossing Cumming Highway after the visit when she was struck on Tuesday evening, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.
She died at the scene, while the driver pulled a hit-and-run.
‘A terrible situation,’ sheriff’s Captain Jay Baker told WSB-TV.
‘It appears that he knows what happened and he actually continued to deliver packages in the area.’
The driver, identified as London Best, 24, was arrested after a Canton police officer reportedly observed the truck on Bishop Drive with damage suggesting it was involved in the crash.
Best has been charged with vehicular murder and a hit-and-run.
‘We’re deeply saddened by this incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,’ stated an Amazon spokesperson.
‘We’ll support local police as they investigate.’
