Incumbents knocked off in Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw

Saskatoon voters weren’t the only ones electing new civic leadership on Monday.

Residents of Regina, Moose Jaw, and Prince Albert were among the communities that selected new mayors to guide their cities for the next four years. In each election, the incumbent fell well short of their reelection bid.

REGINA

Knocking off incumbent Sandra Masters, Chad Bachynski has been elected Regina’s next mayor.

Bachynski, a resident of the city for more than 25 years, finished comfortably ahead of former councillor Lori Bresciani.

Masters, seeking a second term as mayor, finished third. In 2020, she became the first fully-elected female mayor in Regina’s history.

Bachynski led the way with 15,728 votes, or 31.49 per cent of the vote. That put him 3,303 ahead of Bresciani (12,425 votes for 24.88 per cent) and 4,202 ahead of Masters (11,526 for 23.08 per cent). Bill Pratt finished fourth with 6,033 votes for 12.08 per cent. The other seven candidates were below three per cent of the vote.

MOOSE JAW

The race in Moose Jaw wasn’t even close.

James Murdock more than doubled his opposition’s combined vote total, finishing with 5,437 votes. That was well ahead of the 1,439 votes for Crystal Froese and the 601 votes for one-term incumbent Clive Tolley.

PRINCE ALBERT

After more than a decade as mayor of Prince Albert, Greg Dionne has been voted out.

Dionne, who has served in the mayor’s chair for 12 years, lost handily to Bill Powalinsky.

After winning the 2020 election by a razor-thin margin, Dionne couldn’t pull the feat off again.
