Wink Martindale shades Giants’ disastrous season after messy breakup

Wink Martindale is enjoying the Giants’ misery.

Big Blue’s former defensive coordinator lobbed a barb at his former employer in the latest chapter of what’s been a messy divorce.

“I’m glad I’m here,” said Martindale, now the defensive coordinator at Michigan. “I love the players that we have. Obviously, it’s a different game, but it’s a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7.”

Ouch.

As Bill Parcells said, you are what your records says, and the Giants are a lousy 2-7 this season, opening the door for cheap shots.

Martindale is still seemingly bitter about his split after two seasons, the first of which resulted in the Giants’ lone playoff win since their latest Super Bowl victory in February 2012.

The relationship between Martindale and Giants head coach Brian Daboll deteriorated last season as the losses piled up.

Daboll’s fiery temper clashed with Martindale’s calmer approach, although a source told The Post that Martindale would take shots at the head coach during meetings.

It reached a breaking point when Martindale did not react well to the Giants firing Drew and Kevin Wilkins, two of his coaching pupils who followed him from the Ravens — where he served as the defensive coordinator from 2018 to 2021 — to the Giants.

He cursed out Daboll, The Post exclusively reported, and then exited the team’s East Rutherford facility.

Martindale, 61, said he would be resigning but the sides ultimately labeled it a “mutually agreed” decision.

The Giants still owed Martindale $3 million for the 2024 season.

Martindale then left the NFL ranks to head to Ann Arbor and join the reigning national champions, who are a disappointing 5-4 and just 3-3 in Big Ten play.

The Giants moved on to former Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, who has led the Giants to an NFL-best 35 sacks, but has not been able to repeat his rush defense success from Tennessee.
