SAQ employees walk off the job on Monday

It is not known which outlets will be kept open during the strike day.

About 5,000 unionized employees of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) will not be showing up for work on Monday, after their union accused management of not taking their contract demands into account at the negotiating table.

SAQ management did not immediately react to the news of the walkout. It is not known which outlets will be kept open during the strike day.

According to the union, management has asked workers to withdraw their demands and accept the offer already tabled by the Crown corporation. The union says that offer lead talks to a dead end.

While non-monetary issues have been settled, the issue of salaries remains contentious, the union says, as does that of access to full-time positions and coverage by group insurance.

The union says the SAQ has offered salary hikes of 16.5 per cent over six years. The union is seeking 20 per cent over five years.

CSN-affiliated union has been without a contract since March 31, 2023.

The strike mandate voted on by the workers contains 15 strike days.
