Why reeling Jets are favored against division-leading Texans in surprising NFL Week 9 spread

Oddsmakers must be seeing something completely different on the field than everyone else.

The 2-6 Jets are a consensus two-point favorite against the Texans (6-2) for “Thursday Night Football” this week.

New York is coming off five straight losses, including embarrassing defeats to the Steelers and Patriots in the last two weeks.

Still, BetMGM has love for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets this week.

“While the Jets have struggled, the Texans have not been their best either,” Tristan Davis, Senior Trading Manager at BetMGM, tells The Post. “Our power rating makes it a pick’em on a neutral field.”

Interestingly enough, the line opened at Jets -2.5 on Sunday night before public money poured in on Houston and moved the spread to Texans to -1, a wild 3.5-point line movement.

A flip-flop occurred throughout the day Monday, moving the Texans from -1 to +2 as sharp bettors moved the line again.

Oddsmakers at DraftKings also defended their position of making the Jets favored despite nothing on the field pointing to it.

“We utilize our models and power rankings to set lines across the NFL,” Johnny Avello, Director of Sports Operations at DraftKings, told The Post. “It might seem strange to some, given the Jets’ record and the outside noise they are dealing with, but this is still a talented roster with home-field advantage. We are confident in our opening line and expect this to be a heavily bet game.”

DraftKings further tells The Post that just 19 percent of the bets are on the Jets, but some of the more significant action would point to New York.

Twenty-eight percent of the handle is on the Jets, DraftKings tells The Post.

BetMGM is signaling similar notions of money in on the group led by Rodgers.

“Respected action on the Jets,” they tell The Post.

The public is all over the Texans, but Thursday night is looking like a true “Pros vs. Joes” event.

Betting on the NFL?

Gamblers aren’t bailing the Jets just yet, although they probably should, given the circumstances surrounding their special teams and poor coaching.

New York appears to have regressed since coach Robert Saleh was fired midseason, but it’s not too late for a turnaround, with October coming to a close.

The Texans will also be without receivers Stefon Diggs, who is now done for the season with an ACL tear, and Nico Collins for this matchup.
