The body of a woman aged in her 80s has been found in a river near a tea garden in Bournemouth.

After the find was made police cordoned off part of Tuckton Tea Gardens with forensic officers on the scene.

The body was found in the River Stour off Belle Vue Road in the coastal resort.

Dorset Police received a report at 9.21am today about the discovery at the picturesque spot, popular for boating and the waterside gardens.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: ‘The death is not being treated as suspicious and the woman’s next of kin has been informed.

‘The coroner has also been notified. Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this very difficult time.’

The Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was also called out to assist with the rescue from the water.

A spokesperson said: ‘One crew from Christchurch and our technical rescue team from Poole attended this incident.

‘Firefighters assisted the police and ambulance service at the scene and the stop message was at 10.01am.’

Crews from South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust attended in land ambulances.

A spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 09:25hrs on Monday 29 October to an incident in Bournemouth.

‘We sent two double-crewed land ambulances and an operations officer to the scene.’

Police have cordoned off a section of the riverside where boats can be hired out and a footpath runs alongside the water.

The tea gardens said on its Facebook page that ferries are cancelled today ‘due to circumstances beyond our control’ and apologised for any inconvenience.

The Dorset Coroners Service confirmed that it has been notified about the death.
