Homes were evacuated near a train station in Scotland after a suspicious item was discovered during a probe into a man’s death.

Properties surrounding Overtoun Court in Dalmuir, Clydebank, were evacuated today after the item was found in the tower block.

The discovery came as forensic officers had been investigating the unexplained death of a 58-year-old man on October 17 and knocking on doors in the block, according to BBC News.

Police said there was ‘nothing to suggest’ a link between the suspect item and the death.

ScotRail trains through Dalmuir station have been cancelled or delayed until 9am tomorrow morning, with a replacement shuttle service running between Dumbarton Central and Helensburgh Central.

Chief Superintendent Gary I’Anson, Divisional Commander for Argyll and West Dunbartonshire, said: ‘I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as we continue to deal with this incident.

‘Emergency services remain at the scene and police are working with partner agencies to provide support and reassurance to everyone affected.

‘We would encourage anyone in the community with concerns to speak with officers in the area.’

The explosive ordnance disposal unit was called to the scene after the discovery and people were told to evacuate as a safety precaution.

A nearby community centre has since been opened for evacuees to rest in.

Staff at the centre told Metro they had ‘a couple of people’ in and the atmosphere was ‘good.’

Police Scotland said in a statement earlier: ‘Officers searching a property in Overtoun Court in Clydebank, as part of an ongoing investigation, have discovered a suspect item.

‘EOD has been informed and several surrounding properties are being evacuated as a precaution. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area.’
