Another Calgary business closed for selling uninspected meat

Alberta Health Services inspectors have issued closure orders to another Calgary business found to be selling uninspected meat.

The orders were issued Thursday to Gimsap African Asian Mart after inspectors found an uninspected blackened cow head, sheep heads, cow hooves and cow intestines, among other uninspected foods.

At the latest business in question, Gimsap African Asian Mart, one of its locations was forced to close this week, while another was handed several orders.

At its now-closed southeast Calgary location, inspectors found uninspected eggs on the shelves available for retail; uncovered meat being stored on the floor of the walk-in freezer; and a build-up of dirt and debris on surfaces including the floor and walls of the walk-in freezer.

AHS also reported poor lighting, limited draining in the hand-washing sink basin, and structural damage to surfaces around the establishment, such as moisture damage to the base shelf of a sink and exposed drywall along the wall in the meat-cutting area. Investigators also didn’t find a sanitation schedule.

The southeast location was ordered to close immediately until the business takes several steps, including ensuring all food comes from a list of approved food suppliers, keeping all food stored six feet from the floor, and cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces, among other actions needed to grant re-opening.

Its northwest location, inspectors found an uninspected blackened meat head packaged in plastic without a label or invoice, large bags of unlabelled beef tripe and chicken in the walk-in freezer, and the business was unable to provide invoices for any of its meat products.

The company was given until Friday to resolve the issues at its northwest Calgary location.

The owners of the food market were unavailable for comment on Saturday.
