Manchester United have made contact with Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies’ camp, with the left-back out of contract at the end of the season.
The Canadian is into the final few months of his contract with the German giants and is yet to agree a new deal, with talks not seemingly progressing.
His contract situation has attracted a number of the world’s biggest clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Manchester United would be up against some serious competition if they make a move for the 23-year-old, but they have already made very early enquiries.
Sky’s Florian Plettenberg reports that the Red Devils have made an informal approach to Davies’ camp, although there are no further details as to how that enquiry progressed.
The Canada international would be Manchester United’s first choice as they look to solve the problem they have had at left-back for some time.
Luke Shaw has long been first choice on the left side of defence but his numerous injury problems have caused headaches for a string of United managers.
The England international has not played a match for the Red Devils since February, returning from injury to play for England at Euro 2024, but then returning to the sidelines.
Still just 29 years old, Shaw is back in training after his latest calf injury, but is not set to return this weekend against West Ham.
Tyrell Malacia has also had an injury nightmare at Manchester United, missing the whole of last season with a knee problem and still yet to appear during this campaign.
The likes of Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot and Victor Lindelof have all filled in at left-back while the specialists have been struggling over the last 18 months.
There remains the possibility that Davies could sign a new contract at Bayern after he was full of praise for manager Vincent Kompany earlier this month.
He told The Athletic of the Belgian: ‘He is a very brilliant guy. The way that we’re playing now is very intense.
‘He picks the best team and the best players to put on the team that train well. Every training session is a battle for the starting spot. Nothing is guaranteed. The way he talks to the team, he is polite but firm. He has ideas and we’re executing them well.’
Former Red Devils defender Wes Brown wants to see Shaw back in action, but is a big fan of what Davies can do.
‘Alphonso Davies is a great player,’ Brown told Instant Casino. ‘I think everyone wants to see Luke Shaw back but it’s been a long time since he had a consistent run in the team and the team needs backup at left-back – it’s as simple as that. If United are looking at Davies, then he’d be fantastic addition in my opinion.
‘I still have faith in Luke Shaw however and I’m waiting for him to come back in. On his day, he’s still the first choice left-back for me – it’s just a case of whether he can stay fit now. Lisandro Martinez covered at left-back but that’s not his position, I don’t think he found it difficult, but you could tell it wasn’t his natural game on out wide and you really need world class players there. The team needs someone who is a Grade A left-back in that sense.’
