Lady Gaga has just released her new single Disease and fans are already hailing it ‘song of the century’.
The 38-year-old pop icon – who recently unveiled her Joker 2 tie-in record Harlequin – has now dropped the lead track from her upcoming first solo album since 2020’s Chromatica, with fans and critics calling the ‘dark pop banger’ a true return to form.
With the lowkey synth-heavy intro building to an anthemic chorus, there are already comparisons to classic songs like Bad Romance and Judas.
In the chorus, Gaga belts out: ‘I could play the doctor/ I can cure your disease/ If you were a sinner/ I could make you believe.’
She’s certainly made believers out of her fans, who have been going wild on social media since the track dropped at 5am UK time (midnight on the United States’ East Coast).
‘Dark synth Pop is my favorite Lady Gaga. If Born This Way and Artpop had a child, it would be #DISEASE. Gaga is back! 🔥🔥🔥🔥,’ wrote @_romeko on X, while @AndrewWalsh (and many others) called it ‘song of the century’.
‘SONG OF THE YEAR, SONG OF THE CENTURY, SONG OF THE AGE,’ shouted @Niko_Kamp, as @billyonIne added: ‘Gaga being back in a HUGE way with a dance dark pop banger and incredible visuals … THATS MOTHER (monster) ALWAYS!’
Fan @TaylorKsCalves described the track as ‘the most “GAGA” song in ages without sounding like any of her previous songs’, insisting: ‘She’s done it again. Pop perfection.’
‘#TheQueen is back #Gaga @ladygaga #DISEASE #LG7,’ wrote @HuGoGarcila, while @TrevorAllenMD quipped: ‘For the first time in 5 years I’m happy to see the headline “DISEASE” 🥳👏🎉🎼🎧’
Another fan, @AlexksPhoenix, broke the track down, saying: ‘The dark aura of Born This Way. The throbbing, crisp synths from ARTPOP. The elevated vocals of CHROMATICA. The industrial-tinge production from a new era. She REALLY put the GAGA on LADY. #DISEASE #DISEASEISCOMING’
Earlier this year, Gaga marked her birthday in March with a message to her fans, saying her ‘heart is bursting with gratitude for my own health and music.
‘I am writing some of my best music in as long as I can remember,’ she wrote at the time.
She thanked her fans for the ‘real love’ they have for her music.
‘Thank you thank you thank you for loving me the way you do and for having such a real love for my songs. I’ve been writing pop songs since I was a little girl. I can’t believe I still get to do what I love,’ she continued.
Gaga added: ‘This year will be an important and meaningful year for us I know. Music changes people’s lives. I’m so honored I get to be a part of that in this life.’
