There’s no shortage of fabulous food to enjoy throughout the year, but there’s just something about Christmas food that hits different, right?!
From turkey with all the trimmings to chocolate logs, gingerbread houses, panettone, and decadent cheese boards, there’s a lot to get excited about.
But perhaps one of the best things we eat when the winter months roll around are pigs in blankets. Such a simple little thing, just pork wrapped in more pork, but they never fail to hit the spot.
And if you’re a big fan, then we’ve got some good news for you, as Iceland is going to make all your pigs in blankets dreams come true this Christmas.
The retailer has unveiled an entire range dedicated to the sausage side dish, which includes everything from standard pigs in blankets (£2.25 for a 12 pack), to a luxury pig in blanket inside a giant Yorkshire pudding (£5).
If you like a big sausage, you can always supersize your PIB with Iceland’s Luxury XXL pigs in blankets (£5 for a 2 pack). These bad boys caused quite the stir online when they launched for the first time in 2023, with numerous innuendos being made.
Responding to a post about them on the New Foods UK Facebook, a user named Soo Soo joked: ‘I was told it’s not about size!’ to which Jill Carrick replied that it was all about: ‘Girth darling… girth’.
And Donna Winterburn couldn’t help but ask: ‘What in the world of massive donkey kong longs is that?!?’
There are also XL pigs in blankets, if the XXL ones prove a little too much of a mouthful, plus pinwheel pigs in blankets, and Hunters pigs in blankets.
For those wanting something a little more substantial, Iceland also has a range of pigs in blankets meals such as luxury pigs in blankets carbonara, luxury pigs in blankets lasagne, and pigs in blankets double cheese burgers with melting cheese middles.
Not all of these are new products for 2024, with some of the items returning to Iceland’s shelves after proving a hit last year. In 2023, the retailer was hailed as ‘pigs in blankets heaven’ on TikTok by @bigdaddybsfoods and it seems they are giving the people what they want again this Christmas.
But it’s not just Iceland that’s got the goods. A number of other supermarkets also have some fun festive twists on the popular sausage snack.
Take M&S for instance, their new range features pigs in blankets mac & cheese, as well as halloumi pigs in blankets with hot honey.
At Tesco you ca buy pigs in blankets flavoured coated peanuts, and Sainsbury’s has pigs in blankets crisps, as well as pigs in blanket treats for dogs, so your pooch doesn’t have to miss out on the festive fun.
Heinz also recently caused a stir as they’ve launched new Beanz Pigs in Blankets (with Christmas seasoning). The product well and truly divided fans, as some were keen to give it a try, while others thought the tins sounded ‘troubling’.
On the festive tin of was described as being ‘peak Britishness’.
In response to the post, u/fezzuk admitted: ‘Honestly I’m tempted.’ As was u/LoisTano who thought the beans would make a nice addition to their ‘post-Christmas sandwiches’.
u/dramallama-IDST posted: ‘Curiosity will get the better of me and I’ll try this at least once regardless of my expectations.’ And u/TemptressAngel08 was in agreement that they ‘looked interesting’.
However, u/Discopants180 wrote: ‘Heinz were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ Similarly u/MrLuchador proclaimed: ‘Our science has gone too far.’ And u/jaimeleblues added that they thought it sounded: ‘Gross. Utterly gross.’
It’s not known how long the limited-edition product will be around for, but tins are being sold on the Heinz website for £2.50 for a 400g tin.
