Used Mazda3 2014-2018 Buying Guide – Everything You Need To Know

A used Mazda3 may be the thing if you’re not too fond of the omnipresent Corollas and Civics.

Mazda’s popular compact Mazda3 sales in Canada between the 2014 and 2018 model years averaged around 31600 units; a healthy number proving its popularity and ensuring a solid market for repair and maintenance parts from both Mazda and the aftermarket. The latter is important for used vehicle shoppers looking to get a second hand car that’s easy to get parts and service for at competitive prices.

Mazda3 2014-2018 interior and practicality

In its class the 3 certainly wasn’t the largest or most accommodating in terms of interior space for either passengers or cargo, but it’s still a comfortable hauler for regular-sized adults; front and rear. Taller than average riders may not appreciate the lack of headroom. Most found the infotainment system and center-stack controls easy to get used to and relatively trouble-free. The hatchback version provides more versatile cargo space, but at the expense of the rear seat when it’s folded down. Wind and road noises are a little higher than expected but still within the acceptable range for this class of ride.

NRCan fuel economy ratings ranged from 7.5L/100km combined for the 2.0 L to 7.8L/100km for the 2.4L. Surprisingly the manual transmission equipped units showed no economy advantage at the pumps.

Problems in Mazda3 2014-2018

Rust and paint peel top a very short list of common concerns on second hand Mazda3s. Earlier models were known for paint adhesion problems on lower edges such as door bottoms, rocker panels, and wheel-well lips. Having a thorough under-carriage inspection by a qualified tech before purchasing is a must. If you find a corrosion-free model and buy it, get an annual anti-corrosion spray done by a credible shop.

Mazda3 2014-2018 reliability

Chronic engine and transmission problems were few on the Mazda3 and routine replacement and maintenance items are readily available from a wide variety of shops at expected pricing for this class of vehicle. Having a pre-purchase diagnostic scan of all on-board computer systems done by a knowledgeable tech can help reduce the risk of running into most electronic-based glitches.

2014, 2015 and 2016 models were recalled for a faulty parking brake that did not engage properly and a leaky gas tank! 2016, 2017 and 2018 models were recalled for fixing the faulty windshield wiper relay which could lead to them becoming inoperative. The entire range was recalled for defective rear view camera that would display a flickering or distorted image. Ensure the model you buy has been to the workshop to fix these issues.

Which pre-owned Mazda3 should you buy?

If you want to take advantage of the collision mitigation systems and fewer corrosion issues, stick with the 2017 or 2018 GT level Mazda3 and for more flexibility in cargo carrying, opt for the hatchback version.
