An Iowa man is facing charges for allegedly strangling a woman with the American flag before her boyfriend intervened, according to reports.
Adam Sotzen, 39, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested early Monday morning following the reported strangulation and assault of the victim, who survived the attack, and her boyfriend at their home in North Liberty.
Sotzen showed up upset and possibly drunk over a prior dispute with the woman, according to a criminal complaint obtained by KCRG.
The deranged madman started to destroy property in front of the house in a rage over the previous dispute which the victim did not detail, according to the complaint.
Sotzen then allegedly grabbed an American flag from the front of a nearby home, rolled it into a chord, and wrapped it around the victim’s neck.
“You need to die,” Sotzen reportedly said while squeezing the breath from her body, the victim told police.
When the woman’s boyfriend intervened, Sotzen allegedly punched him in the ribs and the face leaving him bloodied.
The suspect then drove away from the victim’s home and was arrested after being pulled over by police.
Sotzen is no stranger to cops. In 2012, he served time for an unspecified “serious misdemeanor,” according to state prison records.
He is now facing multiple charges for Monday’s attack including assault with intent to inflict serious injury, operating while under the influence, and harassment.
