A Missouri television reporter was injured by a stray bullet fragment at a shooting range campaign event for Democratic US Senate candidate Lucas Kunce on Tuesday afternoon.
The Kunce campaign hosted the event at the Democrat’s private residence alongside former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger.
Kunce and other attendees were firing at a set of targets in his backyard during the event, according to the Kansas City Star.
The injured reporter, KSHB-TV’s Ryan Gamboa, suddenly began to bleed from his arm after being grazed by a fragment that bounced off of a shooting target.
Kunce was the only person firing at the time and quickly pivoted to aid the reporter, according to KSHB 41.
Kunce, a veteran who served 13 years in the Marines, used his belt to help stop the bleeding and wrapped gauze around the injury. The gauze was then swapped out for medical tape, and Gamboa was later checked out at a nearby hospital as a precaution, according to KSHB 41.
The campaign event was held just two weeks out from Election Day, where Kunce is facing off against incumbent Republican Sen. Josh Hawley.
Kunce has consistently emphasized his military service throughout his run and in television ads, with many featuring him using a gun.
Kunce was last polled trailing behind Hawley, with Emerson College Polling and The Hill reporting 40% support for the Democrat.
