Strike threat grows as custodial staff at Edmonton Public Schools vote ‘yes’

More than 900 custodial staff at Edmonton’s largest school board have voted in favour of striking, compounding the threat of a strike by educational assistants and other support staff.

A spokesperson with CUPE said local 474 has not issued strike notice to Edmonton Public Schools and the hope is that they will be invited back to the bargaining table with an adjusted offer, but they are prepared to strike.

The majority of local 3550 members are educational assistants (1,750) but workers also include support staff like clerks, administrative assistants, speech language pathologist assistants, librarians, food preparation staff, licensed practical nurses and technicians.

More to come.
