A woman has died after being hit by a bus in the middle of Nottingham city centre just ahead of rush hour.

Emergency services were called to Lower Parliament Street at 6.05am this morning following reports of a collision involving a bus and a pedestrian.

The woman, who was in her 30s, was treated at the scene but died a short time later, and a police cordon remains in place around the area between Milton Street and Glasshouse Street.

Drivers have been asked to avoid the area, and Nottingham City Transport (NCT) have said there are ‘severe delays’ to its services due to the incident, resulting in several temporary stop changes.

Chief Inspector Dean Gallacher said: ‘This was a tragic incident and we are currently working to understand exactly what happened.

‘The road will remain closed for some time as investigation work is carried out and we advise drivers to avoid the area until further notice.’

A spokesperson for the East Midlands Ambulance Service said: ‘We received a call at 6am this morning, Tuesday 22 October to Lower Parliament Street, Nottingham.

‘The caller reported a medical emergency. We sent two paramedics in two ambulance cars, a crewed ambulance and a responder from the air ambulance.’
