SaskPower warns of e-transfer scam targeting customers over email

Anyone who has attempted to accept the deposit is advised to contact law enforcement “immediately.”

SaskPower has issued a warning about an email scam that is asking customers to accept funds via e-transfer by claiming to be from the Crown corporation.

Customers have reportedly received emails from a “SaskPower Carbon Council,” which asks the recipient to deposit a large sum of money from the Government of Saskatchewan through Interac e-transfer.

People are advised not to click any links inside the email, as the contents are fraudulent and SaskPower “does not send e-transfers,” stated a news release issued by the Crown on Monday.

SaskPower says anyone who has attempted to accept the deposit or clicked any link inside the scam email should contact law enforcement “immediately.”

Similar scams have attempted to engage via text and social media, website pop-ups and over the phone. Customers are reminded to always check the sender’s email address to confirm the message originated from SaskPower before engaging.

Anyone who suspects they’ve been the victim of a scam can report the incident to local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-850.
