NYC Democratic Socialists back anti-Israel pol Zohran Mamdani for mayor

The city chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America has officially endorsed Israel foe and Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani for mayor.

Mamdani, a member of the DSA, was arrested Oct. 13, 2023, for participating in a protest outside Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, demanding a cease-fire after Israel struck Gaza in response to Hamas’ brutal terror attack a week earlier.

Last year, he also introduced the “Not on Our Dime!: Ending New York Funding of Israeli Settler Violence Act” — legislation aimed at barring New York-based charitable groups from engaging in “unauthorized support of Israeli settlement activity.”

As for the DSA, it backs the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against the Jewish state and a US arms embargo of Israel.

As a DSA candidate, Mamdani would almost certainly be the most anti-Israel candidate in the race. He has reportedly been eyeing a mayoral run.

“NYC-DSA has officially decided to endorse Zohran Mamdani in the June 2025 Democratic primary election for mayor of New York City,” the lefty group said in a note Saturday to members after its annual convention.

“Assembly member Mamdani will have our organization’s full support should he officially decide to launch his mayoral campaign.”

The statement said Mamdani had more than 60% support from its seven branches and the backing pf 107 of the 130 delegates among its “comrades in every borough.

“Now, it’s time for us  to get to work to replace our corrupt, autocratic mayor with a proven socialist and a cadre-member of NYC-DSA,” the group said, referring to indicted Democratic Mayor Eric Adams.

Mamdani had no immediate comment to The Post.

Notably, the DSA did not say the endorsement covers a potential non-partisan special election should Adams step down before his term expires at the end of next year.

The socialists in recent years have focused on state legislative races and the City Council after helping elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Congress in 2018.

It did not endorse a candidate for mayor in 2021.

While many DSA delegates expressed enthusiasm for the backing of Mamdani, there were a few skeptics wondering whether supporting a citywide campaign as opposed to a state one was prudent.

“Not sure of the wisdom of this despite his many talents. Should he stay in the State Assembly and build seniority and power? Will he reveal our weakness with the run,” DSA member Doug Henwood wrote on X.

Democrats who have announced runs for mayor include city Comptroller Brad Lander, former city Comptroller Scott Stringer and state Sens. Jessica Ramos and Zellnor Myrie. Adams insists he will seek re-election despite fighting federal corruption charges, which he denies.

On the Republican side, Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa is expected to make another run for City Hall.
