CSSDM suspends 11 teachers at Bedford Elementary School over toxic climate

Support is already planned for Bedford students and substitute teachers have been appointed.

Eleven teachers from Bedford Elementary School were suspended at the request of the general director of the Centre de services scolaire de Montréal, who made the announcement Saturday evening in a press release.

Isabelle Gélinas asked the management of the institution to immediately suspend the teachers concerned and the educational services of the school will be reorganized on Monday.

Gélinas made the decision as soon as she learned on Thursday evening the names of the teachers accused of having established a toxic climate within the school, raising concerns about the physical and psychological safety of students. An investigation was launched to shed light on these allegations.

The Montreal school service centre (CSSDM) specifies the suspensions will remain in effect during “the entire duration of the work of the investigative committees mandated by the minister of Education.”

They must determine whether the 11 teachers in question “committed serious misconduct or an act derogatory to the honour or dignity of the teaching profession in the exercise of their functions.”

Support is already planned for Bedford students and substitute teachers have been appointed.

The CSSDM says it is working “to restore a healthy and safe climate at the Bedford school,” while three other establishments have been targeted by ministerial investigations since the launch of the investigation into Bedford.
