Man dead following northeast neighbourhood shooting Friday night

A man is dead following a shooting Friday night in the northeast community of Homestead.

Calgary police said officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Homestead Drive at about 7:20 p.m. for reports a man had been shot. Once there, they found the victim deceased.

The suspects had fled before police arrived, a CPS release states.

Homicide investigators believe the shooting was targeted. Officers remained on scene Friday night to speak with witnesses and collect security camera footage from the area. Homestead is a newer residential community located east of Taradale, across Stoney Trail.

The age of the victim was not released. Calgary police said an autopsy is being scheduled by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

It’s the second fatal Calgary shooting in eight days and at least the fourth incident of gun violence this month.

Michael Vesterfelt, 62, died in hospital Oct. 10 after he was shot at the Forest Lawn rooming house where he lived. Police have not announced an arrest in that case.

Three other people have been seriously injured in shootings this month.

A man and woman were wounded early Oct. 8 in a suspected targeted attack in the northeast community of Saddle Ridge.

The pair were shot after a suspect ran up and fired several shots into a truck they had just entered after leaving their home. The suspect in that case also remains at large.

A man in his 30s was transported to hospital in critical condition — he was also later upgraded to stable — following a dispute between two groups downtown on Oct. 2. Two people fired guns during the altercation at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 4 Street S.E. before fleeing the scene.
