Calgary Public Library’s cybersecurity breach the result of suspected ransomware attack

Last week’s cybersecurity breach at the Calgary Public Library was likely caused by an attempted ransomware attack, library officials confirmed Friday.

A week after a data breach led to the decision to physically close all 21 of the library’s branches around the city, CPL issued an update that said analog services, which resumed Wednesday, will continue for the foreseeable future.

“Calgary Public Library continues to experience service disruptions due to a detected cybersecurity breach,” the statement read. “As part of containment procedures, library services requiring technology are still unavailable.

“The investigation is ongoing but as of today we can confirm our cybersecurity team suspects that this was an attempted ransomware attack that our monitoring systems blocked.

“As part of our containment protocols, we proactively shut down all servers and systems. The Library has not been in communication with any threat agents.”

The library said at this stage of the investigation, it is still working to determine if any employee or membership data were impacted. “We are committed to reporting any impact to privacy as soon as we know more,” it said.

All 21 locations in Calgary continue to operate at regular hours with modified service, according to the library.
