Montreal police arrest five for alleged extortion

Three suspects, all minors, were arrested in connection with an alleged arson attempt July 12 in Verdun. Two suspects are accused with involvement in threats and firearm discharges targeting a Ville-Marie restaurant.

Five suspects, including three minors, have been arrested in connection with extortion crimes, Montreal police said Thursday.

The suspects include three 14-year-olds who police allege attempted a July 12 arson attack on Social, a Wellington St. bar in Verdun, a police spokesperson told The Gazette.

Police arrested one suspect Wednesday in connection with the alleged crime and two suspects “at the end of the summer season,” a Montreal police statement said.

The other two suspects, a 20-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, were arrested in connection with alleged intimidation of a de la Montagne St. restaurant in Ville-Marie. Police allege the threats were first made in July, followed by three separate incidents in August that saw shots fired at the restaurant’s facade.

Montreal police are asking business owners facing extortion not to cede to threats and to call 911 instead.
