The group won through a lottery subscription, which they started doing 10 years ago at a wine night
A group of eight moms in Calgary has won a $1-million prize through an online LOTTO 6/49 subscription.
The group — comprised of Catherine Forsyth, Barbara Stromquist, Joanne Deaver, Laurel Gordon-Cooper, Shirley Eagle, Susan Cahill, Wendy DeMontigny and Wendy Merriam — have been long-time friends and raised their children together.
“We started as a parent group and now we’re also a grandparent group,” said Forsyth in a news release.
The moms’ group plays the lottery through Subscription Spot, and found out about the win through a phone call.
Forsyth said they started a lottery subscription 10 years ago at a wine night as a way to avoid going in weekly to buy and check tickets.
Forsyth was the one to receive the call about the group’s win, and called the rest of the women to share the news.
“They all said the same thing,” she said. “’Oh my god!’
“We had cheers and giggles, and a few asked if it was real.”
On how the winners will be spending their money, “most of us will be enriching our current lives,” said Forsyth, adding that they plan to do some travelling along with helping friends and family.
Western Canada Lottery Corporation described the women as “nothing short of giddy” in their prize claim interview.
The winning prize was from the Gold Ball Draw on Sept. 11, and if split evenly amongst the group, each winner would receive $125,000.
Calgary currently has one unclaimed lottery prize of $100,000, from an EXTRA ticket purchased March 29 with the winning numbers 4664852.
