With consistently warm temperatures, Calgary on cusp of breaking century-old weather record

As of Wednesday, Calgary had its 162nd consecutive day with temperatures exceeding 9 C, marking the city’s third-longest stretch on record

Calgary is on the verge of breaking a century-old weather record for most consecutive days with daily high temperatures nearing double digits — with a streak of temperatures exceeding 9 C stretching back to early May.

As of Wednesday, Calgary had its 162nd consecutive day with temperatures exceeding 9 C, marking the city’s third-longest stretch on record. The 166-day record, set in 1920, extended from May 4 to Oct. 15 of that year.

Weather forecasts indicate Calgary could tie this record but is not likely to break it, as the city’s weather is expected to change “significantly” starting Monday, according to Environment Canada.

The second longest stretch of 165 days took place in 2001, from April 22 to Oct. 3.

Weather historian and forecaster Rolf Campbell specializes in tracking weather records across Canada. He maintains a dedicated account on X (formerly Twitter) offering Calgary-specific insights on historical weather data.

Using weather data from Environment Canada, Campbell has highlighted other recent notable events in Calgary weather:

  • Calgary recorded its warmest Oct. 14 in more than 70 years, with a high of 23.6 C, last seen in 1953.
  • The city experienced its wettest September since 2005, receiving a total precipitation of 74 mm.
  • A recent streak of 159 consecutive days with minimum temperatures at or above 0 C ended recently, breaking an all-time record.

But with snow in the forecast for Monday, it looks like our days wearing T-shirts are numbered.

Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor says Calgary’s “warm fall” will soon wind down, after Calgary’s ninth-warmest September on record, with mean temperatures 3.1 degrees above historical averages.

Temperatures dropped early in October, with overnight lows nearing freezing, but quickly rebounded with a high temperature of 23.2 C on Oct. 7.

On Monday, Proctor says things will start changing “significantly,” with a daytime high barely above freezing and an overnight low dipping below zero.

As far as the potential for Calgary to break the record spotlighted by Campbell, it seems likely Calgary will stay well above the 9 C threshold through Sunday when it will tie the record. Proctor forecasts highs of 10 C on Thursday and Friday, and warmer temperatures returning for the weekend.

Overall, Proctor said Calgary’s winter weather this year will consist of “more typical” temperatures and precipitation levels than what we have seen in recent years.

“We’re definitely gonna be trending downward with temperatures, and seeing more potential for snowfall,” he said.
