Man charged with shooting up house, extorting its occupant

No one was hurt but after the victim contacted police, it was determined a number of shots had been fired from a passing vehicle

Police have charged a Calgary man with riddling a northeast Calgary home and nearby vehicles with bullets and extorting their owner.

On the morning of Sept. 19, police say a man noticed his home in the 0-100 block of Savanna Green N.E. and his two vehicles had been struck by a volley of gunshots.

No one was hurt but after the victim contacted police, it was determined a number of shots had been fired from a passing vehicle at about 2:20 a.m. that morning.

“Four days later, the victim contacted investigators, as it is believed he had received threatening phone calls referring to the shooting and demanding a large sum of cash,” police said Tuesday in a press release.

“Through CCTV and evidence left at the scene, investigators identified two suspects in the shooting.”

As a result, Gursewak Singh, 32, has been charged with property damage over $5,000, multiple firearms offences including reckless discharge of a firearm and extortion.

Charges are pending against another suspect, said police.

Singh’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 18.

City police expressed their gratitude for the public’s patience and assistance in the investigation.

“Violence and intimidation have no room in our city,” said Acting Sgt. Tracey Johnson.

“We will continue to investigate this incident to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.”

The incident isn’t connected to any other current investigations, said police.
