An ITV documentary about women who have chopped off men’s penises is airing tonight.

A man’s worst nightmare, I Cut off His Penis: The Truth Behind The Headlines, will explore the phenomenon of penicide.

The show will follow the case of Lorena Bobbitt who went on trial for chopping off her husband John Bobbitt’s penis in 1993.

Lorena severed John’s penis with a knife while he was asleep in bed after she claimed he had raped and abused her for years, which he denied.

Former US marine John was charged with marital sexual assault later that year but was acquitted, while Lorena was acquitted of assault by reason of insanity.

I Cut Off His Penis will also explore other incidents of penicide that have happened across the world in the UK, US and Thailand.

The synopsis says: ‘This revelatory documentary explores other cases that have happened around the world.

‘Travelling to the USA, UK and Thailand, we go beyond the tabloid headlines to hear the extraordinary personal testimony of both women and men who have witnessed and felt the impact of this act.

‘From the women who committed the act, to the men who were cut, to the surgeons who re-attached the penises, we ask why this very specific act of violence is committed.

‘Is penis-cutting a malicious act, long-awaited retribution or, for some, argued as a means of protection?

In 2019, John recalled the horror he felt when he woke up to discover Lorena had cut off his penis.

‘I sprung up and I was bleeding, I was applying pressure, them immediately I thought it was something out of a horror movie. A nightmare…turned into reality,’ he told ABC News.

John’s penis was found by police near a 7-Eleven and an officer put it on ice and transported it to the hospital.

Dr David Berman, a plastic surgeon who operated on Bobbitt, said that the surgery’s focus was to reconnect the arteries, veins, and nerves so John would have blood flow and sensation in his penis.

The surgery lasted nine hours and was a success.

‘It remains the most interesting and dramatic case I’ve ever done in my life. It kind of really blew a lot of people’s imaginations away with what could be done,’ Berman said.

John went on to have a short career as a porn star.
