Squatters accidentally set fire to a vacant building, Montreal police say

No incendiary devices were discovered in the building, though personal effects were left behind.

A vacant building in Montreal’s Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighbourhood was badly damaged by fire Sunday night.

Squatters broke into the building and lit a fire to keep warm, Montreal police believe. A 911 call reported the fire on Cremazie Blvd. near Chateaubriand Ave. around 8:30 p.m.

No incendiary devices were discovered in the building, though personal effects were left behind, leading police to the squatter theory. No arrests were made and there were no injuries, as the building was empty.

The Montreal police arson squad will try to access any surveillance cameras in the area for more information.
