The hockey world continues to mourn the shocking deaths of the Gaudreau brothers, killed Aug. 29 when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver as they rode bicycles along a rural road in Salem County, N.J.
Saturday’s pre-game ceremony at the Saddledome included a video tribute to Johnny — including some of his highlight-reel goals and assists during his nine-season stint with the Flames — and a moment of applause that turned to a standing ovation.
Just before the ceremony, Sportsnet showed a message from Johnny and Matthew’s parents, Guy and Jane, and their sisters Kristen and Katie.
“Hi Calgary, on behalf of the entire Gaudreau family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our Calgary family,” Jane said. “Your thoughts, your prayers, your cards, your gifts and your visits have meant the world to us. The love and support you have shown for John, Matty and our entire family has helped us through the hardest time of our lives.”
“Calgary and the Flames organization have been a special part of our lives for over 13 incredible years,” Kristen continued. “We have made so many friends that have become family to us and we will always cherish the memories we have made here.”
“Thank you again for standing by us when we needed you most,” Katie added. “Please continue to keep our family in your thoughts as we work together to keep John and Matty’s legacy alive. We can’t wait to come visit Calgary again and thank you all in person.”
Wearing a red Flames hoodie, Guy concluded the message with well-wishes for the Flames in their matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers.
“Good luck to the Flames tonight,” he said. “We’re very excited to watch you play.”
