Prominent Cuban reggaeton artist José Manuel Carbajal Zaldívar, known to fans as El Taiger has died at the age of 37.
His family confirmed his death in a statement shared on his Instagram Stories.
El Taiger succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head, which he sustained exactly one week prior to his death in Miami.
On October 3, around 7 a.m., police officers responded to a call at NW 17th St. and 10th Ave in Miami, Florida.
There, they found the musician with a gunshot wound inside a black Mercedes SUV.
He was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he underwent surgery and was placed on life support.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, El Taiger ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
El Taiger was a beloved figure in the reggaeton scene, known for blending traditional Cuban rhythms with reggaeton to create what is known as Cubaton.
His debut album, Taiger, was released in 2016, propelling him to fame within the Latin music world. In 2017, his song La Habana was featured on the soundtrack of the blockbuster movie The Fate of the Furious.
He is also remembered for songs like La Historia, El Papelito, Habla Matador, and Rulay.
‘From the moment of his arrival, a team of physicians at Jackson Memorial worked tirelessly to provide him with the care he needed,’ his family shared in the official statement.
‘During this incredibly difficult time, family, friends, and supporters joined together in prayer, hope, and support, seeking a miracle. To all who offered their prayers, we thank you.’

The circumstances surrounding El Taiger’s death remain under investigation.
Miami police have not yet determined whether the shooting was a result of foul play or if it was self-inflicted.
However, El Taiger’s manager, Macel Reinosa, expressed doubts about the possibility of suicide, stating to CBS News Miami: ‘Nobody in the team believes that he committed suicide, based on what they are saying on the bullet.’
Reinosa also mentioned there is a person of interest in the case.
As fans and loved ones process this devastating loss, El Taiger’s family and management have asked for privacy and respect during this difficult time. Details regarding his memorial service will be announced at a later date.
