The Yankees have a tough test in Kansas City against Seth Lugo, who will take the mound for the Royals in Game 3 of the American League Division Series.
Lugo parlayed a solid 2023 season into a three-year, $45 million deal with the Royals over the offseason, but no one saw what he did in 2024 coming.
The veteran right-hander crashed the AL Cy Young conversation this year, posting a 3.00 ERA with 181 strikeouts while tossing more than 200 innings for the first time in his career.
Lugo took the ball in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against the Orioles, holding Baltimore to just one run but lasting only 4 ⅓ innings.
I’m betting on him to pitch deeper into Wednesday night’s game against the Bombers.
Lugo has been an absolute workhorse for Kansas City this season, pitching into the sixth inning in 29 of his 33 starts.
He was pulled early from one of those four starts, a late-season outing against the Braves after the Royals had already clinched a playoff spot.
DraftKings Sportsbook oddsmakers hardly expect him to pitch as deep as he did consistently during the regular season, pegging his out total at 15.5, meaning he’d need to go 5 ⅓ to hit the over.
Lugo has proven he can hit this number with ease, but he’s also drawing a Yankees lineup against which he’s enjoyed past success.

Aaron Judge is hitless in eight plate appearances against Lugo.
Juan Soto is hitting just .250 in 21 times at the plate against him.
Jazz Chisholm, Giancarlo Stanton and are hitting a combined .175 off Lugo.
Look for Lugo to pitch deep into this one.
The play: Seth Lugo to get more than 15.5 outs (+125, DraftKings)
