Six people injured after explosion, fire at northeast townhouse complex

Six people were sent to hospital Saturday night following an explosion and fire in the northeast community of Monterey Park that destroyed three townhomes.

One of the victims was reported in life-threatening condition, while another was listed as serious.

Fire crews were called to the 0-100 block of Las Americas Villas N.E. at around 11 p.m. for reports of a structure fire and explosion. When they arrived, three townhomes were fully engulfed with flames were nearing a fourth, according to a release.

Residents reported hearing an explosion and debris was scattered across a large area.

Residents from nearby townhomes were able to evacuate their residences. The four townhomes are not habitable, and residents will be displaced, the release states.
